The Sobering Realities of Impaired Driving & How You Can Prevent It!

April is a very significant month, not only because it marks the beginnings of warmer temperatures, but because it is marked “Alcohol Awareness Month.” April is dedicated to teach, spread awareness and reduce stigmas about alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. In the spirit of alcohol awareness month, we want to bring attention to the dangers of driving under the influence and how you can prevent it.

You Can’t Deny the Facts!

According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use is responsible for 88,000 deaths in the US, each year. There is nothing wrong with consuming alcohol if you are of age, but it is important to drink it in moderation. Furthermore, it is never okay to be under the influence of alcohol when driving. Did you know that 1/3 of all traffic fatalities are alcohol related? There 1.4 million arrests and 1.1 million convictions for drunk driving each year! These facts are sobering, and show the devastating reach that impaired driving has amongst US citizens. The only way to see these numbers decrease, is to prevent it before it happens!

You Have Options

If you know you will be drinking and need a source of transportation, it is important to plan ahead! There are a number of options available to you if you ever find yourself in need of a ride.

Plan to have a Designated Driver

Establishing a designated driver before your night begins will alleviate any stress or rash decisions when needing to get home. You can agree amongst your friends to alternate who the designated driver is, so you will always have a safe ride home.

Uber/Lyft/Other Ridesharing Apps

Uber and Lyft are known for efficiency and convenience. If you find that you are unable to drive or that your driver for the night is under the influence, a ridesharing app will be a quick and easy solution.

Public Transit

If you are on a budget, then public transit will be a great option. With the busses, subways and rail systems, public transit offers a versatile way to travel to your destination.

April marks a month of change, and this is why it is fitting to represent alcohol awareness. We want to change how people view excessive alcohol consumption, especially when under the influence of driving. Let the change start with you: always plan your ride ahead if you will be drinking and if you see someone getting into their vehicle under the influence, offer them an alternative option.
